Tips On Conducting Presentation

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 Posted by Anonymous 4 comments
I am busy conducting classes to my customers these 3 days up until tomorrow. So I will just splurge on tips to conduct a good presentation.

1) Know your audience:

You need to know what ticks your audience. Are they technical persons? Are they inclined more towards academics? Are they more on marketing stuffs?

If you know what is the goal of the classes or presentation that you conduct, then you can know what type of peoples that will be attending the presentation. Communicate with your superior (who asked you to present or conduct the class) on what is the end in mind for conducting the presentation.

2) Know your stuffs:

You cannot present something that you don't know. If you don't know the stuffs you're supposed to present, you will be either

  • Reading the slides and makes your presentation boring.
  • Be shoot at with questions which affirmatively - you cannot answer.
Either way, you will make a fool of yourself :P

So be prepared. Ensure that you know your materials inside out. Ensure that you specify what scope that you will be covering. If you know the stuffs well, you won't have any fear.

3) Know your jokes:

Jokes are hard to make. Wrong jokes, you might offend somebody. No jokes, your class might be pretty dull. Personally, I rarely do jokes. Or maybe I did, but people can't understand my jokes. HAHA.

So, unless you have a talent for joking, be cautious of your jokes. Use questions instead. Ask your audience if they understand what they're presented with if they felt silence suddenly. Chances are, they don't.

When they do not understand, they'll asked you question. Then you will need to elaborate or answer in simple way to make them understand (refer #2). If they can understand what you're presenting, usually you'll see some nods of heads around. That might then bore you because you're the only one doing the talking.

So, what should you do to keep your class entertaining?

Ask them questions. Any relevant questions. Like:

  • How many of you are actually ?
  • Do you like doing programming / administration /
  • How do you feel about this subject ?

If there's no response, change your questions. Instead of asking them if they like something, ask them again if they don't like something.

4) Know yourself:

Presentation is all about communicating to people. You are people,  I am people, we are people. If you want to make an interesting presentation, you need to know yourselves why certain presentation feels interesting.

Chances are, your audiences are similar to you. It is highly unlikely that you're going to present something to random person (unless if you're in sales or if you're in  politics).

If you're a student of medicine, you will highly likely presenting medicines to your target audiences.

If I am a database administrator, chances are I am presenting to people who are interested in databases only.

So, you need to know what does an interesting presentation consists of. Usually, a good material that answers what you want to know; combined with a good two-way communications (Q&A session is enough); combined with some jokes and ways you communicates the ideas.

That is more than enough for you to do a presentation. If you hate a presentation, most likely you'll see why you don't like it.

So, replicate what you see when attending other people presentation in your own presentation. That's the key to success.

If you need to do presentations - I'd say, good luck! :D

The Question About Gen Y Women

Friday, April 2, 2010 Posted by dueng 5 comments
Recently, I read this book.

Invisible Trade, talking about high-class sex for sale in Singapore. Singapore known to legalize sexual transaction in Geylang area. That's equivalent to Batam in Indonesia.

Working lady, prostitute, hooker, whore, stripper, call girl, escort, gigolo, toy boy etc could be all classified as sex worker. They're getting paid for doing sexual related things. It's a good book really for most part cause it's a good tragedy. I just love good tragedy. The rest is in the details.

Anyhow, a colleague brought up an interesting topic in the office. She was saying that Gen Y women not care much if their husband getting into affairs as long as money and/or love is there for them. They could just be satisfied with money and/or love cause it's expected from the man they're married to have an affair - knowing how many attractive yet single ladies out there.

I couldn't help but to disagree at some point of the statement. I agree that Gen Y women not care much if their husband getting into affairs but love and money couldn't just heal you out of it. What I could see in Gen Y women are more independent thought in them. Most of them used to work at some point of their single life which normally could ended up with marriage around 25-30 years old normally. They get so much exposure on living on their own and most of them still keep working even after marriage. Dependencies towards man and position of man as breadwinner wasn't a natural factor anymore in marriage. Husband and wife depending on each other both emotionally and financially.

That's mean Gen Y women have better options should an affair broke up in their marriage. Not that they couldn't care much but they have ways to deal with it by terminating the marriage and starting brand new life. Women nowadays even get paid more than they used to hence they could earn more than men.

However, it's also relate to the point of peer pressure whereby women nowadays being brought up in such luxurious lifestyle that it comes to their nerves. As I would like to relate back to the book that I read, more and more university student and young professional getting into escorting and call girl business. As highlighted in the book, they're doing it to get some extra money and sometimes to get the luxury of getting showered with luxury items/attention from men - it's noted that most men who using escort service or call girls agent are men with money to burn. It's an interesting point to note that the women getting into this for money while the men getting into this for attention and love. Both could get into trouble; married men get into affairs and young women trapped into cycle of vicious sexual transaction to satisfy their pleasure guilty ridden over their head.

But again, who am I to judge them? What I could see is just good business. (err...not i'm pimping nowadays. I'm still small time "machai" in this big corporation.)

Anyhow, I'm trying hard to finish this book cause it has second edition which I presume would tell more dark tragedies. I enjoy the book so far. Owh...this book written by Gerrie Lim and this book sells at Monsoon Books. You could find it here: http://www.monsoonbooks.com.sg/bookpage_0510336.html

A Glass Half Full, or a Half Empty?

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 Posted by Anonymous 9 comments

I am going to talk about glass today. No, not the texture of the glass, neither how it was made from sand. I am going to talk about people, context, and its funny correlation with human.

After nearly a quarter of a decade living, I only give up on one thing - human. Every person I met have different perspective; different context. That I can get. What I cannot get is how ignorance people are when they are being given another perspective. So, instead of giving perspective every time, now I mostly hear what other people have to say.

There's three type of people I've met when it comes to perspectives and context.
  1. Those who embrace changes and saw the differences or new ideas as something that's thought provoking.
  2. Those who reject the new ideas; who saw it as something inconvenience; blasphemy.
  3. Those who pretends they embrace the context, but they actually not.  Worst, some of them even backstabbed you with curses and blasphemy.
Those who falls under category #1 is those who embrace knowledges and take it as their glasses are half empty. Once it is about to be at the limit, they change their glasses (or context) to a bigger one so that they can appreciate everything that they just learned.

Those who falls under category #2 is those who rejected knowledge and are not willing to expand their context (or changing their glasses to a bigger one). Their usual reaction is denial and rejection.

Those who falls under category #3 is the hypocrite. They take something when it gives benefits to them, and they reject something which is an inconvenience for them. But what worst and make them difference than category #2; they have the hearts to use your perspective to backstab you - and gain some advantages over you. That is a real WTF people.

Example 1:
Somehow; someway; arrogance seep into him / her and he / she adapted the "holier than thou" attitude.

When I say that he / she is changing for the worst - he/ she denied it and stop being friends with me. They also tell people that I'm liberal and "sampah". Whoa~ I was shocked.

Ironically, these are the people who once said that "hey, you're my best buddy / best friend forever / BFF" and shit.
Example 2:

He / she have problems in relationship. Cliche, I was always being the reference point when anyone have problems in love or relationship. LOL.

So I give him / her the thoughts of my mind. How worst his / her spouse can be. How good the thing actually is because their relationship is one-sided in a way. At least that's how people looked at them.

You know what's the usual responses?

"I know that , but..."

Damn. Sometimes I just hate "the but". You asked for my opinion and yet you have "the but" and can't move on?

*~sigh~*

Changes are hard. Changes are challenging. Sometimes we don't see what we do wrong, or what we missed when we let the problems blinded us.

But when people told us about it, take some time to consider the other options. Take some time to weigh in the other perspective. Take some time to  gain your courage to move forward.

Because in life, if you want to grow; you need to learn and face challenges.

Remember, the glasses were made from sand. They have been heated, processed, and face many things to change them into something shiny and useful. That's the lesson for today.

Be a glass that's half empty; not a glass that's half full.

What am I preaching here? I also don't know. Go troll it. I just think it is appropriate to motivate people in the middle of the week with some thought-provoking concepts. If you're feeling down or weak, read this; learn something; and face them. Good luck!

P/s: No, I haven't updated my blog. Maybe I'll post the same thing there.

Live with it!

"It's hard to make decision."

Says who?

Of course, if you want to make a right one...it would be god damn difficult. Or trying to satisfying everyone. It's an utopia. Not Ethopia but utopia; the perfect world.

However, does make a decision that hard?

People always asking me, how could you make decision in impulse and not feeling regret about it. I say, I dunno. I just go for it.

As much as I'm a logical, calculated and calm person..I have my impulse moment. Moment whereby I make decision on my impulse, instinct instead of consulting with my logical mind. I had done it so many times. I have my regret but I just know how to live with myself about it.

I guess, people always want to make the right decision. I also do but most of the time, you just don't. The insight of the future that wasn't granted to mere mortal; key factor of making the right decision. Whatever decision that you called upon at this moment is CORRECT AT THIS MOMENT. The decision might harm you in the future but you wouldn't know until the time come.

So, what you could do best? Live with it.

How? Go figure.

After all, making bad decision wasn't that bad. What you could learn from it only you could understand it. In order to be better, you learn from it. And you stop making the same bad decision. Then, you could make good decision. Which derived from the first bad decision that you made.

In conclusion;

bad decision => right decision;

IF and ONLY IF you learn from it.

If you can't live with this on any bad decision that you made today, then try this:

There is always first time to everything.

How's that? Go sleep now. You lost your worries.

Hate Monday Blues? No, I don't but maybe you do lol. And no, that is not a blues band. Hating to wake up on Monday morning is a norm, unless that Monday happened to be a public holiday. Why? Because PROCRASTINATION that's why. You eagerly leave all the work on Friday, getting ready for the coming 2 days of relaxing known as Weekends, and having the 'Oh shit' moment on Monday morning.

How to beat that hateful weekly tragedy? There are some tips by googling, but for those without the ability to hit that url, I'm sharing some.

1) Sleep in some extra hour/minutes on Monday mornings. If you're in the case of 'WTF I HAVE TO WAKE UP AT 7AM NO COMPROMISE OR ELSE TRAFFIC JAMS / PACKED LRT / whatnot', try packing everything on Sunday nights (docs, lappy) so that you can steal some minutes of sleep.

2) Hop out of bed and straight to the shower! No point pulling up your blanket, Monday exists no matter how hard you try to deny that.

3) Pull the curtains and enjoy morning sunlight. It can help reset your body clock for the rest of the week.

4) Exercise or coffee or both. Endorphins from exercise and caffeine from coffee are feel good 'drugs' for mornings.

5) Anticipate your Monday morning on Friday afternoon. Fight the temptation to race away from a messy desk. Clean up your desk and leave yourself a to-do list to make Monday morning a little more tolerable.

You're not the only one having this illness on Monday morning. There are millions out there feeling the same, including your boss. Try to think of something good that will happen at work later, and it maybe lift your mood a bit.

A cute girl treatment for your Monday morning sickness (not 'that' sickness)
