New Home Guide

Sunday, July 25, 2010 Posted by dueng

I was busy last 2 weeks moving around my stuff to our new home. Well, I'm still renting and need to find a permanent place soon. The house was an old house, although the interior wasn't that bad given how old the house. However, there are lots of thing that could put a hole in your pocket should you not carefully plan. Amongst thing that you need to prepare yourself when moving to new house could be listed as follows:

Rental Downpayment
Normally, you need to pay downpayment for rental. Usual case goes by 2+1 rental plus utilities. However, there are some landlord that quite generous by combining the utilities as 2+1 rental only although it's quite rare to find it nowadays. This item alone could really setback your pocket. Consider having quite some amount of money or ready to borrow from friends or family. Consider to have around RM 2,000 - RM 2,500.

Furniture & Electronics
If you're renting before, moving to new house wasn't that difficult given that you have everything in place - except when you're menumpang rumah saudara mara which they provide you with the furniture. If you're married and previously renting as single person, BEWARE cause the cost of buying new furniture will be overwhelm. there are few essential furnitures that you might want to consider before you make your mind on which to buy:
  • Bed & Mattress - cheapest queen size you could get is around RM 400 though I would suggest to get something at better price of RM 500 - RM 600. Mattress could varies from cheapest of RM 80-RM 90 to RM 1,000 - RM 2,000. Better go for moderate price of RM 300 - RM 400. Bargain at any times. And get wooden bed instead of metal. Why? Metal proof to be cheap however not as tough as its look.
  • Kitchen cabinet - You need one for your stove. I'm not talking about state-of-the-art kind of cabinet but rather a modest one. You could get it from furniture store and cheapest you could get around RM 200.
  • Fan - You need one should the house you're renting wasn't ready with it. Cheapest you could get around RM 45 - RM 60 (standing fan - good brand not cap ayam).
  • Stove - A basic needs. A normal two unit stove price around RM 60 - RM 150. New tong gas could cost around RM 70 (14 kg).
  • Washing Machine - Also another basic needs. Cheapest automatic washing machine you could get at RM 500 (good brand not cap ayam).
  • TV - Well, if you already have computers/lappy, it wouldn't be as much necessities. Cheapest you could get for 15" around RM 200 (good brand not cap ayam).
  • Other electronics & furnitures like fridge, dvd player, Astro, sofa, rice cooker, vacuum cleaner and wardrobe could wait.
House Maintenance
You could get a well maintained house but if you're unlucky, you might get a shithole of hell and some maintenance needed. Some landlord generously covers for all renovation and maintenance expenses though there are some areas that might not included. Spare at least RM 500 for painting job, piping and wiring job should needed.

Transferable Items
Your Astro dish, TMNet accounts, phone line etc needed to use some money for the transfer. If everything could be transferable, the cost relatively affordable but if you need to reapply new, it would be deadly. Cheapest: RM 300, Most Expensive: RM 700.

Misc
The biggest items yet cause everything that couldn't be classified as anything as above will be dump here. Few of items that deem necessary which falls under misc are as follows:
  • Cleaning tools - mop, broom, pails, detergent, Dettol, Clorox, fabric softener, machete, cangkul, cleaning cloth and sabit. Spare RM 150 on this. Get this from economy arcade or hardware store.
  • Toiletries stuff - shampoo, shower gel, soap, tooth paste, mirror for bathroom and shaver. Spare RM 150 on this.
  • Kitchen stuff - plate, spoon, fork, knife set, rice storage, periuk, kuali, sudip, dish detergent, dish rack, mug, cups, teapot, jug, cutting board, dustbin, black rubbish bag, sugar, salt, turmeric powder and all sort of spices. Spare at least RM 500 for this since the list given here is not exhaustive enough. You could obtain these items from economy arcade or hardware store.
  • Flooring stuff - tikar getah and carpet. Tikar getah is essential while carpet is a wants. Cheapest up to RM 2/meter, most expensive up to RM 10/meter - tikar getah price.
  • Freight - Cheapest is by your own/friends/family transport. You could charter a lorry for around RM 60 - RM 200 depending on size, rental fees and your negotiation skills.
In overall, you need to carefully plan to avoid any unnecessary stress - financially. Anyhow, whatever listed here as mere guidelines and not exhaustive enough. Pricing depending on places and size of the items. Have fun moving around! :)

  1. eh, adakah kamu suami isteri sudah tinggal under one roof? good for you guys! :)

  2. nia: yes. sudah tinggal serumah. fuuh..letih berkemas tak hilang lagi. :)

  3. poket aku koyak gak mula2 masuk rumah... sebaik laa cabinet dapur, wardrobe dgn kipas ada semua siap

beli yg asas je mula2... pastu ade cash sket baru apgred... pastu bila dh byk duit baru renovate

  4. me too, likewise. heheh...

for the first few months, you will be obsessed with everything you don't have for the house. poket koyak rabak, kad kredit segala asek swipe utk lengkapkan rumah.

buy all the basic things needed, dont get too obsessed with the aesthetic(like me) and spend your moolah wisely.

heheh.. all house are bound too have flaws here and there.. little crack here, some dent there.. and that's what make its personality. Asalkan jangan crack and dent sampai runtuh sudahlah :P)

  5. kamu lupa..
another item yg membuatkan poket berlubang.. Peti ais

if u/wifey are going to cook, mesti ada peti ais utk menyimpan barang2 basah, sayur etc.

nasihat: go for 2 doors fridge, never ever 1 door type. price range 900-1.2k.
beli sekali, tahan 10 tahun or more (i think)

  6. yoda: tau takpe. memang rabak siot poket. hahaha. tu la, nak slow2 upgrade la ni. hahaha.

sue: hahaha. just getting the necessity already alot of money. just to make the house cozy enough for human living. right now, almost complete for cozy living, not luxurious living yet.

rina: hehehe. that's why am not putting it in the necessity listing cause it really burn big hole in your pocket. i already have 1 door type fridge, around RM 600 when bought it last time. fridge is quite bertahan as long as you don't go kicking the fridge as punching bag. my home fridge manage to hold up to 17 years (single door). :)

  7. tu belum pikir nak equipped the house for a baby pulak. mana nak beli katil dia, stroller, carseat dan whatnot. hohoho~~
